1. Big Car: Scary Silent Movie + Live Soundtrack. YOU MUST witness this film at least once in your life. It’s the original Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde with John Barrymore, (grandfather of Drew Barrymore). This version is creepy, although my fav version will always be the 1941 version with Spencer Tracy/Ingrid Bergman (something about Ingrid Bergman just melts the screen.) After you view the Barrymore version, check out Turner Classic Movies on Saturday Night/ Halloween (see your cable provider guide for channel and time) to watch the Tracy/Bergman version and compare notes.

2. Indianapolis Museum of Art: Calling all creatures of the night! Another silent film is playing this week, at the IMA, F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu. This is the film that started the whole Vampire craze, not to mention for you history buffs, read up about the making of the film and you will find that there was a fantastic feud between Murnau and the Bram Stroker estate that prevented him from using references to the exact “Draculatory” plot and the use of the Dracula name

1. We Inspire: Florida Nonprofits and farther away (if you can afford the travel expenses)-take a gander, this organization offers a full year ($75,000 value) of marketing/design services. If you are apart of a non-profit that is hurting due to lack of marketing/branding funds apply by 01.15.10 and see if you qualify. This is a great tool for philanthropy as well as a great way to get a design firm’s name further out there.
2. Negative space how I love thee-Logo Love has a fantastic collection of negative space logos.
3. Logo designing tips: Here’s another helpful and clever list at logo love. The best tip I’ve always followed is to design in black first-it will save you some pain in the future with trendy, over gradient-glossy logos that don’t translate well in one color or two color printing.
4. Business Plans for Freelancers: If you are thinking of taking the plunge, do a biz plan and you can figure out the costs, competition and long road ahead-even if you don’t do it. I did before starting mine, and it helped me trememdously in figuring out what I needed to get started. Fortunately, graphic design freelancers don’t need too much overhead to get started, but make an outline for your business before you jump.
